about me

about the listener

I call her “The Listener” but her official name is “Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii.”

This marble statue resides at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire, where a plaque indicates that she was created by American sculptor Randolph Rogers in 1863, and “was the most popular sculpture in America: Rogers and his workshop made 167 versions in two sizes.”

It goes on to say, “The subject is taken from The Last Days of Pompeii, a sensationalist novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The blind Nydia bravely leads two friends out of burning city of Pompeii using her sense of hearing alone.”
